Condition assessment and structural evaluation of existing buildings is not a course that is taught in most engineering colleges. However, this is a task that many engineers are asked to do by their clients and not all of them have had the experience to take on this seemingly simple task but which has several pitfalls. The client's reasons for requesting this service could be due to several reasons such as change of use of the building; vertical or horizontal expansion being considered for the building; understanding why there is noted distress in the facility; desire to understand whether the building has maintained its structural integrity after a hurricane, tornado, earthquake, flood or fire event; or simply the desire to know the potential liabilities when there is an interest in buying or selling a facility. Considering the wide range of reasons for which such assessments need to be done, there is no one methodology that would be considered as the solution for tackling this apparently simple task.

This teleconference will help you become aware of the risks associated with this type of work so you can take appropriate steps to mitigate risk. It will also provide a direction as to how the assessments need to be conducted for different goals and objectives that the client may have. This teleconference will include a discussion on nondestructive evaluation as to when and where such methods can be utilized. Some case histories will be discussed to demonstrate the assessment and evaluation process which you can use as samples for your projects.

Learning Objectives

  • You will be able to discuss why assessments are done.
  • You will be able to identify structural considerations.
  • You will be able to describe the use of nondestructive evaluation methods in structural assessment.
  • You will be able to recognize risk assessment and management of the assessment project.
